Elon Musk’s X becomes paid. On 18th October, the platform revealed a support document on its official account about the fee structure. If you are a new user from New Zealand or the Philippines, you will have to pay an annual charge of $1 to use the platform.
In local currencies, the charge is around NZ$1.43 and 42.51 Philippine pesos.
X has announced this subscription model as part of its “Not a Bot” program. The platform announced,
“This new test was developed to bolster our already significant efforts to reduce spam, manipulation of our platform, and bot activity. This will evaluate a potentially powerful measure to help us combat bots and spammers on X, as it allegedly balances the platform’s accessibility with the small fee amount.”
However, the existing X users in those countries will not have to worry about this subscription model. And being a new user, if you do not subscribe to this plan, you will only have a read-only access to the platform. You will get to read content and videos on the platform but will not be able to post anything.
If a user in these countries opens a new account on X, they will have to provide their phone numbers first. Then, the platform will verify the phone number and ask the users to pay the annual fee of $1. Once they pay the amount, they will be able to like, reply, repost, bookmark, or quote a post.
An advertiser boycott has happened on this platform since Musk has undertaken it. The ownership operations of the platform and content have boosted a 60% slash in its advertising revenues.
This change in the subscription model of new users is seen as a part of Elon Musk’s transformation plan for the X platform. X becomes paid as Musk has been constantly looking for alternative methods for earning “revenues to advertising.” In addition, he wants the platform to become an all-inclusive place where people can use everything, including payment services.
